The Community of Madrid has obtained Spain's first accreditation for identifying grapevine varieties and rootstocks through DNA analysis.

The recognition has been awarded to the Grapevine Genotyping Laboratory of the Madrid Institute for Rural, Agrarian and Food Research and Development (IMIDRA), located at the El Encín Experimental Farm in Alcalá de Henares.
This title, granted by the National Accreditation Entity (ENAC) in accordance with standard UNE-EN ISO/IEC 17025, validates the technical competence and guarantees the quality and reliability of the analyses performed by this scientific unit. The studies compare genetic profiles of plant samples with records from the El Encín Grapevine Collection and the National Catalogue of Commercial Grapevine Varieties to determine their identity or if they are unknown.
This capability is crucial for nurseries, winegrowers, wineries, breeders, public bodies, and researchers, ensuring precision in the identification and origin of varieties, thereby enhancing quality guarantees.
With this new accreditation, IMIDRA now has six laboratories recognized by ENAC at the El Encín Farm (Food, Plant Health, and Grapevine Genotyping), in addition to the three at the Animal Selection and Reproduction Centre (CENSYRA) in Colmenar Viejo (Dairy Control, Animal Reproduction, and Genetic Analysis).
The Community of Madrid thus reinforces its role as a reference center for research, innovation, and scientific-technical services for the agricultural and food sectors, applying knowledge and technology to improve the production and quality of Madrid's products.
