Madrid's Plaza de Cibeles has seen the removal of several trees coinciding with preparations for the Pope's upcoming visit, sparking political criticism.

Madrid's Plaza de Cibeles presents an unusual sight this week. As preparations for the imminent visit of Pope, scheduled between June 6th and 9th, are being finalized, municipal workers are engaged in removing several trees located next to CentroCentro, in the heart of the iconic square.
This scene has prompted a reaction from Más Madrid councilors, who upon arriving at the Cibeles Palace for the May municipal plenary session denounced the situation. The political party claims to have found "empty tree pits where trees always stood, and a tree pruning and felling operation in Plaza de Cibeles." Más Madrid maintains that "it is not the season for felling" and demands "the immediate halt of these works and immediate explanations from Martínez-Almeida."

"Several trees are currently being removed at the entrance to the City Hall, supposedly for transplanting, but transplanting at this time of year is tantamount to felling them, especially with the heat that is coming."

The municipal party's complaint came as workers were removing several specimens in one of Madrid's most iconic central spaces, coinciding with preparations for the Pope's visit and the setup of infrastructure for religious events.
For its part, the Madrid City Council has stated that this is not a felling operation. Municipal sources explained that the Council is proceeding with the removal of six trees from Plaza de Cibeles due to the installation of a stage for the papal visit, as the planned works and structures could harm these specimens.
According to the Council, three trees were removed on Monday, May 25th, and another three on Tuesday, May 26th. All six specimens are being moved to Viveros and will be replanted once the events related to the papal visit conclude. The City Council adds that, after the Pope's visit, they will assess whether the timing is appropriate to replant the trees and ensure their survival, postponing it until autumn if necessary. Furthermore, they are considering adding more trees to the square.
