The incident forced Adif, the infrastructure manager, to suspend services in the tunnel connecting the two Madrid stations to prevent "a major incident". The halt affected services operated by Renfe, Ouigo, and Iryo, causing significant delays to the morning's scheduled journeys.
High-Speed trains were stopped from shortly before 10:00 AM on the Madrid-Levante corridor. Some trains already in motion experienced stops of over an hour.
Around 11:10 AM, Renfe announced the restoration of services on the High-Speed line connecting Madrid with Levante, and long-distance trains are expected to resume their journeys progressively.
