Febo Napoleón received the award for the best reinterpretation of the chulapa attire, while Laura Rodríguez Ropero was recognized for her outstanding upcycling project. This technique transforms used garments into new pieces of higher value, promoting fashion sustainability.
As reported by the City Council of Madrid, the awards were granted by a professional jury as part of the Re-Chulos program. This initiative, promoted by the Spanish Fashion Creators Association with the collaboration of Moda re- (the circular fashion project by Cáritas), aims to bring a new perspective to tradition.
The presented designs originated from a masterclass held on April 24th at Serrería Belga. There, students and creatives explored the reinterpretation of traditional chulapa and chulapo costumes from a contemporary viewpoint, using second-hand clothing, under the guidance of designers Juan Duyos and Miguel Becer.
“"Chulapa fashion reinvents itself and changes every year. The San Isidro festivities are experiencing a new phase of momentum, with high citizen participation and a visible festive atmosphere in the streets."
The event was attended by Marta Rivera de la Cruz, Delegate of Culture, Tourism and Sport for the City Council of Madrid. The public also had the opportunity to contribute by donating clothing for future designs.
“"I feel very fortunate to have participated and I hope to present again in the next edition."
