The 29th edition of PHotoEspaña, under the theme 'Reimagine', takes place in Madrid from May 13 to September 13, 2026, offering a profound reflection on the role of contemporary photography.

The PHotoEspaña 2026 festival, one of Europe's most significant cultural events, presents its 29th edition with an ambitious proposal that seeks to redefine the role of photography in the current era. Under the slogan 'Reimagine', the Madrid event addresses the overproduction of images, the hybridization of languages, and the constant technological evolution of the medium.

"Under the theme 'Reimagine' we present PHotoESPAÑA 2026. From May 13 to September 13, the 29th edition will feature 100 exhibitions, 270 photographers and visual artists, and 80 artists participating in professional programs."

PHotoESPAÑA · Festival Organization
Between May 13 and September 13, the festival will host approximately one hundred exhibitions, including parallel initiatives, the OFF festival, and invited venues. This scale solidifies PHotoEspaña as an international benchmark, aiming to expand its territorial reach, diversify audiences, and foster dialogue between different understandings of photography.
A notable aspect of this edition is the significant female participation, with 65% women artists. This explicit commitment to a more balanced scene brings together historical figures, established names, and new voices that are transforming the boundaries of the photographic medium. Among the prominent names structuring the program are Richard Avedon and Robert Frank, connecting the public with pillars of 20th-century photography history. The full presentation in Spain of The Americans, Frank's influential work, is particularly highlighted.
The festival also pays tribute to key figures in Spanish photojournalism such as Colita and Isabel Azkarate, whose careers trace the genealogy of documentary photography in Spain. Their works engage in dialogue with those of established artists like Isabel Muñoz and contemporary authors who explore identity, memory, and the construction of reality from experimental perspectives, such as Laia Abril, Bego Antón, Greta Alfaro, Talia Chetrit, or Rafał Milach.
The Netherlands is the guest country for this edition, resulting in a series of exhibitions and activities that promote dialogue between the Dutch and Spanish art scenes. The Círculo de Bellas Artes hosts the exhibition 'Reimagine', bringing together thirteen artists from both countries. Additionally, the Teatro Fernán Gómez presents 'LUX & UMBRA' by Viviane Sassen, an exhibition that spans over thirty years of the artist's career, exploring her unique use of color and shadow.
The festival's network of venues is one of its major assets, including institutions such as the Royal Collections Gallery, the Museum of Romanticism, the National Museum of Decorative Arts, and the National Archaeological Museum, alongside spaces like the Mapfre Foundation, the Círculo de Bellas Artes, and the Telefónica Foundation. The Serrería Belga Cultural Space is established as a central hub, hosting Isabel Azkarate's 'Azkarate vs. Azkarate' exhibition and the Photobook Space, dedicated to contemporary editorial production.
The OFF festival, with the participation of over thirty galleries, and the Open Circuit, which in September will allow the discovery of alternative city spaces, expand the exhibition offerings. The program extends to invited venues such as the Ateneo de Madrid, the Hospital San Rafael, and the Royal Photographic Society, reinforcing the social dimension of photography. The festival's international projection is evident in projects like 'Ojos que yo encendí', an exhibition that will travel to Asunción in homage to the creators of the Generation of '25.
