The Civil Guard has arrested an 86-year-old man at Adolfo Suárez Madrid-Barajas airport after discovering 4.555 kilos of cocaine hidden inside his luggage.

The incident occurred on the morning of June 5. Officers from the Fiscal and Borders Unit in Madrid identified a suspicious suitcase on an international flight originating from San José, Costa Rica, with a final destination of Brussels, Belgium.
Upon inspecting the luggage, police officers found 4,555 grams of the narcotic substance. The drugs were distributed into nine paper-wrapped cylinders concealed among the passenger's belongings.
According to the investigation, the detainee, a Swedish national, was allegedly recruited by criminal organizations taking advantage of his vulnerable economic and health situation. These networks employ social engineering techniques and messaging campaigns to recruit individuals outside typical criminal profiles to transport illicit substances.
The suspect has been brought before the judicial authority, which has ordered his imprisonment. Authorities noted that the individual had scheduled several international trips to destinations including Bogotá, Dubai, Barcelona, and Madrid.
