More than 465,000 travelers have used the buses of Madrid's Municipal Transport Company (EMT) during the early hours of this Tuesday, as part of a free travel initiative that will extend until Wednesday to mitigate traffic congestion after the Easter holidays.

The delegate for Urban Planning, Environment, and Mobility of the Madrid City Council, Borja Carabante, reported from the EMT Madrid Operations Center in Fuencarral that this figure represents a 25% increase compared to the previous Tuesday. The measure aims to encourage the use of public transport and familiarize new users with its benefits.

"We continue to improve the EMT, offering a better service and making it attractive so that citizens who do not use it, take advantage of these free days to learn about its benefits and advantages. And therefore, become regular users of the Municipal Transport Company."

Free travel on EMT Madrid buses, with the sole exception of the Airport Express line, and on the Bicimad service, will be in effect from midnight on Tuesday until 11:59 PM on Wednesday. Users must validate their transport pass or, if they do not have one, will receive a single ticket free of charge from the drivers.
The Bicimad electric public bicycle system also joins this initiative, offering free rides of up to 30 minutes. This service has 635 stations and 7,795 bicycles distributed across the city's 21 districts, having accumulated over 13.7 million uses in 2025.
The Madrid City Council plans to maintain free travel during periods of high demand and high pollution episodes. The main objective is to strengthen the use of public transport and bicycles, reduce dependence on private vehicles, and advance towards more sustainable mobility in the capital.
