The Deputy Mayor and municipal spokesperson, Inma Sanz, announced after the Government Board that a total of 3,602,716 passengers used the services of the Municipal Transport Company of Madrid for free last Monday and Tuesday. This initiative was implemented to facilitate the return to activity after the holiday period.
The City Council highlighted that these two days registered the highest demand for buses so far this year. On Monday, April 7, over 1.78 million people used urban buses, a figure that rose to over 1.81 million on Tuesday. For Bicimad, 100,230 trips were recorded during those two days, of which 47,752 were made by users without a flat rate.
These figures reflect an increase in bus usage compared to previous years, with a growth of 1.34 percent compared to last year and 3.09 percent compared to 2024. Free municipal public transport is a key tool to promote the use of sustainable means and reduce traffic congestion.
Since storm Filomena, Madrid and the EMT have activated this measure on 31 occasions, totaling 76 days of free service. The objective is to encourage a change in daily commuting habits and reduce both polluting emissions and urban traffic congestion. Bicimad joined this policy after Easter last year.
Over the years, nearly 86.3 million passengers have benefited from free travel on municipal buses, of which 16.28 million were non-regular users. For Bicimad, 633,259 free trips have been recorded, almost half by people without a flat rate. The day with the highest use of free buses was November 28, 2025, coinciding with Black Friday, with over 1.94 million passengers.
The City Council also highlighted the sustained growth of the EMT, which in 2025 reached a historic high of 512 million passengers. Bicimad exceeded 13.73 million trips in 2025 and now has 635 stations and nearly 7,800 bicycles distributed across the capital's 21 districts, reinforcing sustainable mobility.
