The Minister of Transport and Sustainable Mobility has overseen the final tests of the first five T100 and T200 train units at Stadler's Test Center in Albacete. These trains, manufactured by Stadler, are destined for Madrid's Cercanías network and are expected to begin operations by late summer, after simulation tests and staff training are completed.
These trains mark the beginning of a delivery of 79 units that Renfe has contracted for 1.306 billion euros. The new models will offer the highest capacity in the fleet, with up to 912 seats in the T100 and 1,884 in the T200, representing an increase of up to 20% in transport capacity. Train deliveries will continue monthly until nine T100 and eight T200 units are received throughout 2026, with the remaining units gradually incorporated thereafter.
“"The incorporation of latest-generation, high-capacity trains into Renfe's Cercanías fleet will directly impact travelers' quality of life and demonstrates our commitment to improving daily mobility."
The launch of these five trains (three 100-meter T100 units and two 200-meter T200 units) is scheduled for late summer, following pertinent homologation, commercial simulations, and operational tests under various conditions, as well as driver training. These trains will operate on all lines of the Cercanías Madrid network, with the exception of line C9. This service is crucial, transporting over 730,000 passengers daily, accounting for 55% of public service journeys in Spain.
The new Stadler trains are characterized by their high capacity, combining single and double-deck cars, and their adaptability to demand changes, allowing for length extensions if necessary. T100 models can evolve into T120 (five cars), while T200 models are adaptable to T240 (ten cars) or can be reduced to 160 meters. Specifically, the T200 units are the largest in Renfe's single composition fleet, featuring four low-floor cars and four double-deck cars.
In addition to their capacity, the trains incorporate the latest advancements in accessibility and comfort, including space for passengers with reduced mobility, level access doors in single-deck cars, and multifunctional areas for bicycles (up to six in T100 and 18 in T200) and strollers. Platform-level entrances on most doors will facilitate passenger boarding and alighting. They also feature USB charging ports and power outlets, a modern passenger information system, full-coverage CCTV surveillance, LED lighting, and an efficient heating and air conditioning system, contributing to transport sustainability. These Iberian gauge trains can reach a maximum speed of 140 km/h.
