The initial five high-capacity train units for Madrid's Cercanías network have reached Aranjuez, signaling the start of a modernization effort set to boost capacity by 20% from late summer.

These trains, produced by Stadler, are part of a Renfe contract valued at 1.306 billion euros for a total of 79 units. The first five units, comprising T100 models (with a capacity for 912 passengers) and T200 models (up to 1,884 passengers), will undergo final real-world circulation tests before entering service.
Their deployment is anticipated by late summer, following the completion of homologation processes, commercial simulations, and trials under various conditions. They will operate on all lines of the Cercanías Madrid network, with the exception of line C-9 (Cercedilla-Cotos).
The trains, approximately 100 and 200 meters long, feature a combination of single and double-deck cars, allowing them to adapt to fluctuating demand. This flexibility is vital for a network that transports over 730,000 passengers daily, accounting for 55% of public transport journeys in Spain.
Key features include passenger information systems, Iberian gauge, and a maximum speed of 140 km/h. Furthermore, they incorporate the latest advancements in accessibility and comfort, offering spaces for passengers with reduced mobility, level access at several doors, and multifunctional areas for bicycles and child strollers.
To enhance the user experience, the trains are equipped with USB charging ports and power outlets at seats, a modern passenger information system, and comprehensive CCTV surveillance. LED lighting and an efficient climate control system ensure a comfortable environment while contributing to transport sustainability.
Following this initial delivery, more units are expected to arrive monthly, with nine T100 and eight T200 units scheduled for completion by 2026. This acquisition is part of Renfe's fleet renewal plan, which involves a total investment of approximately 3.5 billion euros to modernize rolling stock across the national territory.
