The Madrid City Council has announced that the emblematic Neptune fountain will be illuminated in the blue and white tones of the Uruguayan flag on the night of Tuesday, August 25. This institutional gesture aims to congratulate and strengthen ties with the South American country.
The special lighting coincides with the commemoration of the Declaration of Independence of Uruguay, a historical milestone proclaimed on August 25, 1825, at the Congress of Florida. On that date, the then-called Eastern Province declared its independence from the Empire of Brazil and expressed its desire to join the other provinces of the Río de la Plata, laying the foundations for the current Uruguayan State.
With this initiative, the Spanish capital joins the commemorative events for Uruguay's Independence Day. The Madrid City Council typically carries out these types of tributes to various countries and international causes by illuminating its most representative monuments.
