The Community of Madrid has implemented the first smart lockers of the Metropaq system this Tuesday across 19 stations on Metro Line 3, aiming to simplify parcel collection for users by eliminating the need for additional travel.

The regional minister of Housing, Transport and Infrastructure, Jorge Rodrigo, unveiled the initiative during a visit to the Embajadores station. There, he observed the new system in operation, highlighting that the network will enable the distribution of “more than 3,000 packages daily” through the 57 already deployed points, which, in his words, “will save over 50,000 kilometers on the surface.”

"The Madrid subway will be the first Metro in the world to handle last-mile parcel delivery, and I believe this is great news for all Madrid residents."

Each station will feature three modules of lockers in various sizes, managed by companies such as SEUR, Amazon, and GLS, with a combined capacity to handle over 3,000 daily shipments. The service will operate every day of the year, during the same hours as the Metro, from 06:00 to 01:30.
The project's logistical design has been carefully planned to ensure that merchandise distribution along the Moncloa–El Casar (Getafe) axis does not interfere with regular service operations or train flow. Packages will arrive every morning, starting at 04:30, at the Villaverde logistics center. From there, a train will transport them to Argüelles, where the cargo will be redistributed to eight stations along the line. CITYlogin personnel will be responsible for the final transfer to the corresponding lockers.

"The distribution of packages, in order not to harm public transport service and not to create any kind of incident for all Madrid users who use the metro, will take place from 4:30 AM. At no time will the Metro's public transport service be affected by the implementation of this new logistics system."

Metropaq represents the second phase of the Madrid Metro's freight transport plan. The first phase began on November 28 on the MetroSur line, where approximately 110,000 packages have already been transported via Line 12. In that initial experience, a train made scheduled stops at Alcorcón Central and El Bercial during off-peak hours (between 20:00 and 21:00) to collect shipments, which were then transferred to the Loranca depot before final distribution.
