The machine, which began operations at the end of March, is working towards Madrid Río, as reported by the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure. The Madrid Río station is located 1,114 meters away within the section that will connect Plaza Elíptica with Conde de Casal.
In this phase of the project, the tunnel boring machine must excavate a total of 5,227 meters. Mayrit operates continuously, 24 hours a day, seven days a week, with continuous shifts involving more than a dozen operators. Its monthly advance rate ranges between 400 and 500 meters, a speed ten times greater than traditional construction methods.
Once the tunnel boring machine reaches Madrid Río, a technical stop of approximately two weeks will be made to carry out a thorough review of the machinery before it continues its journey towards Palos de la Frontera, Atocha, and Conde de Casal.
The extension of Line 11 includes the construction of a 6,626-meter tunnel and the creation of five stations: two new ones (Comillas and Madrid Río) and three interchange stations (Palos de la Frontera, Atocha, and Conde de Casal). The Community of Madrid has indicated that the overall works have already exceeded 50% completion.
Prior to the start of the tunnel boring machine's work, a 679-meter section between Plaza Elíptica and Comillas was excavated using the traditional method, which was completed on January 20.
This project, with an investment exceeding 740 million euros, is part of the future diagonal of Line 11. This line will connect Cuatro Vientos with Valdebebas along 33 kilometers and 20 stations, also linking with seven transport interchanges.
