The PSOE spokesperson in the Madrid City Council, Reyes Maroto, honored activist Pedro Zerolo on the 11th anniversary of his passing, highlighting the relevance of his values and criticizing current policies.

During the floral offering ceremony marking the eleventh anniversary of the passing of Pedro Zerolo, the spokesperson for the Socialist Municipal Group (PSOE) in the Madrid City Council, Reyes Maroto, praised the historic activist. Maroto emphasized that his work in defense of freedom, equality, and human dignity remains a necessary reference in the current political context.
Maroto stressed the enduring relevance of the values Zerolo represented, particularly in the face of emerging political forces that, according to the socialist councilwoman, question already consolidated rights, such as the same-sex marriage law, which celebrated two decades of validity last year.
In this regard, the spokesperson linked these ideals with the messages conveyed by Pope Leo XIV during his recent visit to the capital. According to Maroto, the pontiff advocated for «respect, justice, and understanding among people who think differently but must agree for the common good».
Regarding the arrangements made during the pontiff's visit, Maroto expressed her gratitude to public services, municipal workers, and volunteers, highlighting that their efforts were decisive in making the event a success: «That makes us proud of the city we live in».
Finally, the socialist spokesperson took the opportunity to criticize local policies, stating that the papal message against any form of discrimination is incompatible with what she describes as «shameful agreements» between the People's Party and Vox, specifically pointing to the incorporation of «national priority» clauses in their government pacts.
