The Attorney General, Teresa Peramato, has proposed María Isabel Martín as the new chief prosecutor for the Community of Madrid, replacing Almudena Lastra, following a meeting of the Fiscal Council.

The decision, announced by the Attorney General's Office, comes after the Fiscal Council, the advisory body of the Public Prosecutor's Office, met this Thursday. The previous chief prosecutor, Almudena Lastra, had held the position since May 2021 and, despite seeking re-election, her continuation was deemed unlikely due to tensions arising from a case involving the former attorney general.
This change marks the end of an era at the head of the Madrid Prosecutor's Office, which was characterized, among other issues, by the management of investigations related to nursing homes during the pandemic and the institutional repercussions of a judicial proceeding.

"Technical competence, professional rigor, and proven ability to handle responsibilities of special complexity."

Until her current appointment, Martín was part of the Technical Secretariat of the Attorney General's Office. The institution has highlighted her professional profile, emphasizing her "technical competence, professional rigor, and proven ability to handle responsibilities of special complexity".
Martín joined the public prosecutor's career in 2007, beginning her journey in the Melilla Area Prosecutor's Office, where she served as a delegate for Minors. In 2010, she took on coordination duties, managed the Public Prosecutor's Information System, and collaborated with the National Court Prosecutor's Office on matters of jihadist terrorism.
In 2015, she was appointed chief prosecutor in Melilla, also serving as a delegate for Penitentiary Surveillance and Immigration. Three years later, in 2018, she joined the Technical Secretariat of the Attorney General's Office, where she has led the training area for the public prosecutor's career under four different attorneys general.
The Attorney General, Teresa Peramato, has also positively assessed Martín's proposed action plan for the Madrid Chief Prosecutor's Office, which aims to strengthen the body's operations based on principles of excellence, internal cohesion, and a strong commitment to public service.
