The delegate of Housing Policies and president of the Municipal Housing and Land Company of Madrid (EMVS Madrid), Álvaro González, accompanied by the councilor for Hortaleza, David Pérez, witnessed today the start of urban regeneration works in the Poblado Dirigido de Manoteras. This intervention, part of the Regenera Madrid Plan, involves an investment of over 1.35 million euros and covers an area of nearly 6,000 m² in the Manoteras Sur Regeneration Unit.
“"It is about recovering spaces that are currently underutilized and transforming them into more accessible, useful, green, and safe places for the neighborhood. These actions will allow these areas to once again become places for gathering, play, rest, and strolling for residents."
The works will primarily focus on the squares of Cruz Latina and Templarios, as well as on San Pedro de Cardeña and Bacares streets. It is estimated that these actions will benefit more than 5,300 Madrid residents and 2,500 homes in a residential environment that suffered from significant accessibility deficiencies and urban deterioration.
The project envisions a comprehensive transformation of public spaces, with a special emphasis on improving accessibility and connectivity between the two main squares. Accessible pedestrian routes will be created, and ramps will be incorporated to overcome existing unevenness, facilitating movement between different areas. Furthermore, the project will reinforce the green and sustainable character of the environment, doubling the vegetation area from 666 to 1,240 m², and increasing the number of trees by 60%, reaching 64 specimens. These measures will contribute to improving climatic comfort and reducing the heat island effect.
Additionally, urban furniture will be expanded, with more resting areas, and new children's and sports equipment will be incorporated, promoting intergenerational use of public space. The number of lighting points will also be increased to enhance safety and the quality of the urban environment. On San Pedro de Cardeña and Bacares streets, the road section will be reconfigured to prioritize pedestrians, widening sidewalks and improving coexistence between traffic and pedestrian use, without reducing the number of available parking spaces.
These works are part of the Regenera Madrid Plan, a strategic initiative by the City Council to intervene in areas built before 1985, especially in neighborhoods with greater regeneration needs. The plan aims to act on more than 85 km² of the city, benefiting nearly 75% of Madrid's population.
