Madrid's unemployment drops 1.39% in May, with 3,834 fewer jobless

The region records 272,542 unemployed and hiring increases by 5% compared to April, ranking third in unemployment reduction.

The Community of Madrid ended May with 272,542 unemployed individuals, following a reduction of 3,834 jobless people compared to the previous month, representing a 1.39% decrease. In year-on-year terms, unemployment has fallen by 8,767 people.

Data released by the Ministry of Labor and Social Economy places the region as the third autonomous community with the largest absolute decrease in unemployment during the month, surpassed only by Andalusia and Catalonia. Nationally, registered unemployment fell by 1.5% in May, to 2,320,721 unemployed, the lowest figure for this month since 2007.
The Services sector was the main driver of this improvement, accounting for over three-quarters of the national unemployment reduction. Year-to-date, Spain has recorded 134,162 fewer unemployed, a 5.5% decrease.
In the Community of Madrid, unemployment decreased for both men and women. Unemployed men numbered 110,193 (1,971 fewer), while unemployed women reached 162,349 (1,863 fewer). Youth unemployment, for those under 25, also improved with 792 fewer jobless, totaling 17,746.
By activity branches, the Services sector accounted for the largest share of regional unemployment with 220,863 jobless. Industry registered 14,575 unemployed, and Agriculture, 1,702. The group with no prior employment summed to 18,228 people.
Unemployment among foreigners in the region stood at 49,592 people, with 491 fewer unemployed than in April. Of these, 16,496 were from EU countries and 33,096 from non-EU countries, mostly in the services sector.
Hiring in the region saw a 5.01% increase in May, with 185,719 contracts registered, 8,868 more than the previous month. Compared to May 2025, hiring grew by 9.10%. Of the total contracts, 50.07% were permanent (88,672) and 49.93% temporary (97,047).
The Services sector led hiring with 164,486 contracts. Hiring of foreign workers increased by 8.14% monthly, reaching 59,116 contracts.
Across Spain, 1,323,719 contracts were signed in May, 0.4% less than the same month last year. Permanent contracts numbered 572,061, up 3.5%.
Regarding unemployment benefits, 193,611 people received some form of aid in the Community of Madrid as of the end of April. The average amount for contributory benefits was 1,064.6 euros, and total expenditure exceeded 266 million euros.
