The president of the Community of Madrid, from Brussels, has expressed regret over the absence of the Venezuelan opposition leader from the event scheduled at the Real Casa de Correos. The reception for the opposition figure is framed as a tribute to those who risk their lives for freedom and democracy.
The regional president wished a "speedy recovery" to the opposition leader, who will be unable to attend the event in Madrid due to hospitalization. From the Belgian capital, where she was meeting with business leaders, the regional leader reaffirmed Madrid's role as the "home of Hispanicity" ahead of the institutional reception.
“"Puerta del Sol is going to become ground zero for freedom, for liberal democracies, ground zero for the free world."
With these statements, the president sought to project Madrid as a reference point for supporting the Venezuelan democratic opposition. She emphasized that the opposition figure will be received "as deserved, in her home," highlighting that Madrid is a welcoming space for those fighting authoritarian regimes in Ibero-America.
The regional leader linked the opposition leaders to the idea that "freedom and life are the two most important assets man possesses." This reflection aims to frame the tribute as a defense of democratic principles and an implicit denunciation of the political situation in Venezuela.
The president described it as an "honor" to receive individuals who, in her view, "have risked their lives to defend an exiled, persecuted, tortured people," extending this idea to other international realities where similar situations persist in "so many dictatorships around the world."
