The Community of Madrid is preparing to protect infants under six months old, born between April and September this year, against the respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), a cause of illnesses such as bronchiolitis and pneumonia. The Governing Council has approved the acquisition of 49,000 doses, with an investment surpassing 10.6 million euros.
The immunization will take place during October by appointment at nine hospitals within the Madrilenian Health Service network. The included centers are 12 de Octubre, Niño Jesús, Gregorio Marañón, and La Paz in the capital; Puerta de Hierro Majadahonda; Sureste in Arganda del Rey; Móstoles; Infanta Cristina in Parla; and Henares in Coslada.
For infants born between October 1st of this year and March 31st, 2027, coinciding with the RSV transmission season, protection will be administered in the region's maternity wards before hospital discharge.
Madrid's public healthcare system was a pioneer in Spain three years ago with this measure, which has proven highly effective, successfully reducing infant hospital admissions for RSV-related pathologies, particularly bronchiolitis, by 90%. In the 2025/26 campaign, 90% of the target population received this protection.
Furthermore, the region already offers RSV protection in all its vaccination centers for individuals over 80 years old, who are also susceptible to complications. This measure has been included as a pioneering initiative in Spain in the 2026 Lifelong Vaccination and Immunization Calendar of the Community of Madrid.
