The investment aims to improve the automatic detection, counting, and classification of vehicles on the regional road network. As announced by the Minister of Presidency, Justice, and Local Administration, Miguel Ángel García Martín, following the Governing Council meeting, this measure is part of a strategy to modernize traffic information systems.
The new platform will enable the anticipation of incidents, optimization of traffic management, and more precise planning of maintenance operations for regional roads. It will integrate data from current traffic control systems with information from connected vehicles and other digital sources, analyzed by AI to enhance road safety.
Currently, the regional network has 466 traffic counting stations. The smart cameras will complement these records, providing a more comprehensive view of mobility and allowing for earlier detection of congestion.
The system will facilitate accurate calculation of travel times, identification of key traffic movements, and assessment of the impact of works or incidents. Furthermore, it will help predict needs and prioritize actions on the road network.
