The Community of Madrid has officially announced that the capital will be the main host city for Eurobasket 2029, an event aiming to position the region as a global basketball hub.

The agreement, presented on Tuesday, April 21, 2026, stipulates that Madrid will host the First Phase group featuring the Spanish national team, totaling 15 matches. Additionally, the city will be the venue for the entire Final Phase, including the round of sixteen, quarterfinals, semifinals, the third and fourth-place play-off, and, of course, the grand final for the gold medal.

"To place Madrid at the epicenter of world basketball and to leverage the sport to make a qualitative leap, ultimately becoming a world-class spectacle, on par with the NBA Finals, the Super Bowl, or major Formula 1 Grand Prix events."

the president of the Spanish Basketball Federation
The regional president emphasized Madrid's appeal as "the place where everyone wants to be," highlighting the region's capacity to host major sporting events. These include the NFL, the Champions League football final in 2027, the Formula 1 Grand Prix, and the Madrid Marathon, which attracts runners from all over the world.
The Eurobasket 2029 is expected to generate an economic impact exceeding 300 million euros, surpassing the 284 million from the previous edition. This event is seen as an opportunity to boost the economy, tourism, employment, and promote Madrid's heritage and culture.

"Today we are very happy in the Community of Madrid. It is very difficult to be angry when we like to dream big, fly high, and go for everything. We want it all, to live the best years of our lives, and for Madrid to be remembered during this period as 'the place to be', the place where everyone wants to be."

The tournament's opening day will take place at the iconic Santiago Bernabéu stadium, with an anticipated attendance of up to 80,000 spectators, potentially making it the most attended basketball game in history. The remaining matches in the capital will be held at the Movistar Arena. Other initial phase groups of the Eurobasket will be played in Slovenia, Estonia, and Greece.
This will be the sixth time the region has hosted a major basketball tournament, following the Men's Eurobaskets in 1973, 1997, and 2007, whose knockout stages were played at the Movistar Arena, and the World Cups in 1986 and 2014, which also had their final phases at the same venue. The 2008 Pre-Olympic Tournament is also included in this list.
