The Madrid City Council has launched an international ideas competition to redesign the Vado Footbridge, aiming to create a new architectural landmark in Madrid Río and enhance the connection between the districts of Arganzuela and Usera.

This initiative, in collaboration with the College of Civil Engineers, Canals and Ports of Madrid, seeks to replace the current structure, which presents accessibility and safety issues. The new footbridge must integrate design, functionality, and sustainability criteria, adapting to contemporary urban needs.

The Public Works Department aims to replace the current pedestrian and cyclist crossing with one that solves its accessibility and safety problems, which include areas of reduced visibility and elements that hinder safe pedestrian transit.

The Vado Footbridge is a crucial infrastructure connecting Maestro Arbós, Teresa López Valcárcel, and Ricardo Damas streets on the left bank of the Manzanares River, with Vado and Antonio López streets on the right bank. In addition to crossing the river, the footbridge spans the Manzanares Avenue and the M-30 highway, linking the Legazpi neighborhood (Arganzuela) with Almendrales (Usera).
This competition marks the first time the Public Works and Equipment Area has collaborated with the College of Civil Engineers on such an initiative, aiming to attract the talent of civil engineering professionals to generate creative and innovative proposals. The jury, comprising experts in engineering, urban planning, and sustainable design, will evaluate projects based on structural quality, technical and economic viability, and landscape and environmental values.
Three prizes will be awarded: 25,000 euros for the first place, 15,000 euros for the second, and 10,000 euros for the third, plus honorable mentions of 5,000 euros. The first-place winner may also be awarded the contract for drafting the preliminary and construction projects. The competition rules and technical documentation will be published this week on the website of the College of Civil Engineers, Canals and Ports of Madrid and on the Madrid City Council's contractor profile. Proposals can be submitted until August 31, with the jury's decision expected in the autumn.
