The Community of Madrid has authorized an investment of 5.3 million euros to modernize its traffic control system on the regional network. The project, officially announced on July 22, 2026, aims to create a technological platform based on big data and artificial intelligence to anticipate incidents, optimize traffic management, and plan road maintenance.
The core of this initiative involves the 40 intelligent cameras to be installed on the roads. Equipped with artificial intelligence, these cameras will automatically detect, count, and classify vehicles, providing data on traffic volume and frequency on each segment, information previously obtained less comprehensively.
This new system will complement the existing 466 traffic counting stations on the regional network. The combination of data from the new cameras, connected vehicles, and other digital sources, processed by artificial intelligence, will offer a more complete view of mobility in the region, although specific implementation timelines have not been detailed.
According to the regional government, the platform will help detect traffic jams earlier, calculate travel times more accurately, understand main traffic movements, and assess the impact of roadworks or other incidents.
It is important to note that the system will not alter the road infrastructure or the number of vehicles. While it will enable earlier detection of congestion and more precise travel time calculations, it will not inherently reduce traffic jams or shorten journey times, as it is a data collection and analysis tool.
In addition to daily traffic management, the collected data will be used for road maintenance planning, identifying actual needs and prioritizing actions. It is also expected to help forecast the impact of new urban developments or infrastructure on traffic flow and enhance road safety through better traffic condition awareness.
