Between January and April, the Municipal Police of Madrid participated in 200 interventions related to weapon possession in the capital. The majority of these actions were for bladed weapons, occurring within the framework of the municipal security force's collaboration, complementing the primary responsibilities of the Government Delegation regarding public safety.
The deputy mayor and delegate for Security and Emergencies, Inma Sanz, visited the Municipal Police Headquarters to commend the officers for their work. She highlighted interventions such as resolving a threat in Villaverde involving a man armed with a knife, where an electronic control device (ECD) was used, and an operation in three drug dens in Puente de Vallecas alongside the National Police, resulting in the seizure of drugs and weapons, including a firearm.
Sanz also emphasized the arrest in the Latina district of an individual with outstanding warrants and a history of gender-based violence, who was carrying a weapon at the time of his apprehension. The deputy mayor underscored the importance of the Municipal Police's work for the safety of Madrid's residents and the necessity of political will to maintain it.
The City Council of Madrid has expressed concern over the prevalence of bladed weapons, which have led to over 140 injuries attended by emergency services so far in 2026, in addition to incidents involving firearms. Sanz reiterated the demand for legal changes to enhance control over these weapons, impose harsher penalties on repeat offenders, and implement measures against the use of minors by criminal gangs.
For its part, the City Council is committed to continuing the reinforcement of the police force, with 2,800 positions announced, eight new police stations, and the incorporation of new resources such as ECDs and drones, alongside the installation of surveillance cameras.
In the first four months of the year, the Municipal Police carried out 574 interventions related to individuals, 1,227 concerning property, and 2,789 for drug possession and consumption. They also arrested and investigated 105 individuals for assault, 131 for gender-based violence, 22 for sexual abuse, among other offenses.
