The Community of Madrid has begun the administrative process for the extension of Metro Line 11, a project that will link Mar de Cristal with Valdebebas Norte via 8.2 kilometers of new track and six stations, with an investment of 880 million euros.

This extension, which will be carried out using the Mayrit tunnel boring machine, a state-of-the-art piece of equipment, will include stops at Mar de Cristal (connecting to Lines 8 and 4), Ifema-Cárcavas (near the exhibition center and the future Formula 1 circuit), Intercambiador-Ciudad de la Justicia (an intermodal hub with Cercanías and buses), Hospital Zendal, Aeropuerto T4 (with connection to Line 8 and a future Adif High-Speed station), and Valdebebas Norte. Additionally, space has been reserved for two potential extra stations, one next to the Cristalia business park and another in the vicinity of the future Valdebebas Shopping center.
The project, with an estimated cost of 880 million euros for this northern section, anticipates construction starting in 2027 and an optimistic completion date of 2031. This extension is part of the overall expansion of Line 11, known as La Gran Diagonal, which will span 33 kilometers and feature about twenty stations, becoming the second-longest line in the Madrid Metro network, only surpassed by Metrosur. It will connect the southwest with the northeast of Madrid, linking strategic points such as Atocha station and Terminal 4 of the airport, and is expected to serve approximately 900,000 residents.
The planning for the works has incorporated changes and recommendations stemming from the demands of neighborhood associations in the Hortaleza district. The Valdebebas neighborhood association has hailed the expansion as a milestone for the direct metro connection between Valdebebas and Mar de Cristal. Thanks to their efforts, a route reservation has been secured for a potential second station in Valdebebas, and the Valdebebas Norte station has been relocated to improve connectivity with the neighborhood's commercial hub and services such as the Blua Sanitas hospital.

"The extension of Line 11 is a milestone for the long-awaited direct metro connection from Valdebebas to Mar de Cristal."

However, the Community of Madrid has not accepted the appeals presented by the Las Cárcavas-San Antonio neighborhood association, which sought to modify the location of the future Ifema-Cárcavas station. This station will remain on Francisco Umbral street, next to the exhibition center and the circuit for the Spanish Formula 1 Grand Prix, despite residents' concerns that the proposed location was too far from the residential core and would force them to rely on private transport.
