Madrid region experiences hottest and driest summer on record

The region recorded record temperatures and historically low rainfall, marking an "extremely hot" summer according to Aemet.

The Community of Madrid has registered the hottest and driest summer since records began in 1961, with average temperatures of 25.5 degrees and an average rainfall of 17.3 liters per square meter.

The meteorological summer of 2026, spanning from June 1st to August 31st, has been classified as "extremely hot" in the region. The average temperature reached 25.5 degrees Celsius, exceeding the average for the 1991-2020 reference period by 2.5 degrees, according to data from the State Meteorological Agency (Aemet).
Although temperatures have been continuously high, Aemet notes that other years have experienced more intense heat days, although the June heatwave did break monthly records in the region.
This Tuesday, a yellow heat alert was activated with maximum temperatures exceeding 35 degrees in the Sierra and 36 degrees in the rest of the Community, particularly in the Corredor de Henares, south of the Jarama river, and in the Vega de Aranjuez, where temperatures reached 37 degrees.
Regarding precipitation, the summer has been notably dry. The region recorded an average of 17.3 liters of water per square meter, representing only 39 percent of the average value for the quarter according to the 1991-2020 reference period.
A change in the temperature pattern is expected from this Wednesday, with a generalized decrease in maximum temperatures. Aemet forecasts that thermometers will not exceed 27 degrees in Madrid capital (with a minimum of 16), 28 degrees in Alcalá de Henares or Getafe, and 31 degrees in Aranjuez.
