The Madrid Metro is implementing an innovative service, Metropaq, allowing users to collect their online purchases directly at 19 stations on Line 3, optimizing urban logistics and easing traffic congestion.

Starting this Tuesday, April 14, the Community of Madrid is launching a pioneering parcel collection system within the subway, transforming the commuter experience. This initiative, named Metropaq, aims to integrate online order management into citizens' daily routines, enabling them to pick up purchases without deviating from their usual route, thereby contributing to reduced pollution and traffic in the capital.

"The Metro of the future seeks to enhance the experience with new value-added services, but the subway's primary objective remains to offer the best public transport alternative to Madrid residents."

The Councillor for Housing, Transport and Infrastructure, Jorge Rodrigo, presented this deployment, highlighting its role in shaping the “Metro of the future.” The installation of 57 strategically located delivery points addresses the growing need for Madrid residents to balance their urban lifestyle with personal shopping management, eliminating the reliance on waiting for delivery at home or traveling to distant collection points.
The logistics behind Metropaq operate overnight, with a special train departing from the Villaverde depot at 4:30 AM, transporting goods to the stations. CITYlogin personnel are responsible for distribution at the eight key stations on Line 3, ensuring packages are ready for collection by 6:00 AM, without interfering with passenger service. This system is designed to handle over 3,000 parcels daily, which translates to an estimated reduction of over 50,000 daily kilometers of traditional last-mile delivery, improving air quality and easing traffic jams in the city.
To ensure efficiency, the Community of Madrid has collaborated with leading logistics companies such as SEUR, Amazon, and GLS, which will have terminals at each station. Using the service is simple: customers receive a QR code on their mobile phone and scan it at the locker to open it. The lockers will be operational throughout Madrid Metro's service hours, from 6:00 AM to 1:30 AM, 365 days a year. This system was successfully piloted in MetroSur (Line 12), where 110,000 parcels were transported, laying the groundwork for its expansion to the city center.
