The Minister of Housing, Transport and Infrastructure, Jorge Rodrigo, announced the launch of this initiative during his visit to the Embajadores station. This service, promoted by the metropolitan company, will initially operate in 19 stations on Line 3.
Rodrigo detailed that, starting April 14, travelers will be able to use the 57 points already installed on Line 3. The regional government plans to progressively expand this service to the rest of the metro network.
Each station has three terminals with lockers of various sizes, managed by companies such as SEUR, Amazon, and GLS, with the capacity to process over 3,000 packages daily. These points will be available 365 days a year, from 6:00 AM to 1:30 AM.
“"It is a very agile and simple method that avoids unnecessary travel and only requires a QR code to complete the action."
The project's planning has prioritized that the distribution of goods along the Moncloa – El Casar (Getafe) axis occurs without affecting users or train circulation. Rodrigo emphasized that the Metro of the future seeks to enhance the experience with new services, while maintaining its primary objective of offering the best public transport alternative to Madrid residents.
Shipments will begin to be received daily from 4:30 AM at the Villaverde depot, from where a train will transport packages to Argüelles. Subsequently, CITYlogin personnel will be responsible for distributing the parcels to the eight stations on the line equipped with smart lockers.
“"Thanks to this initiative, the role of stations as urban logistics hubs is reinforced, reducing surface traffic and avoiding more than 50,000 daily kilometers of routes associated with traditional delivery."
Metropaq represents the second phase of Metro de Madrid's strategic freight transport plan, which began on November 28 in MetroSur. Following the success of this first stage, which has already transported 110,000 packages via Line 12, the system is now consolidating with its extension to new lines of the network. In this instance, a train makes specific stops at Alcorcón Central and El Bercial between 8:00 PM and 9:00 PM, a period of lower passenger traffic, to collect cargo. The route concludes at the Loranca depot, from where the goods are transferred to their distribution center for final delivery.
