The initiative, organized by the Regional Ministry of Culture, Tourism and Sport in collaboration with the city councils of Alcalá de Henares and Hoyo de Manzanares, aims to introduce young people and their families to archaeological research. Activities will take place at two significant regional sites: the La Cabilda excavation site in Hoyo de Manzanares, from May 30 to June 28, and the archaeological park of the Roman City of Complutum in Alcalá de Henares, from July 2 to September 27.
This program, part of the Regional Heritage Education Plan, is designed for participants to gain firsthand knowledge of the different phases and methodologies involved in a complete archaeological process. Children aged 8 to 14 will immerse themselves in tasks such as guided tours of archaeological areas, simulated excavations, sediment processing, labeling, documentation, and photographing findings.
Throughout the workshops, key aspects will be explained, including site location, archaeological methods, tools used, excavation planning, and the involvement of multidisciplinary teams. Participants will also learn about processing, dating, and classifying materials, identifying plant and animal remains, simulating ceramic restoration, and preparing samples for laboratory analysis, culminating in the interpretation of the site based on the evidence found.
