The decision, communicated by Deputy Mayor and municipal spokesperson, Inma Sanz, after the Government Board meeting, represents an increase of 900,000 euros compared to the previous year. This budgetary adjustment is justified by the rising costs of labor, materials, fuel, and energy, factors that impact every new municipal contract.
“"Every new contract we undertake incorporates these cost increases."
In addition to increased costs, the municipal spokesperson noted that the rise also responds to growing neighborhood demand for Christmas lights to reach more areas of the city, especially those located outside the M-30 ring road. The framework contract, with a duration of 12 months extendable for another 12, is divided into two lots: one for the interior of the M-30 and another for string lights and luminous cherry trees outside, covering everything from installation to maintenance.
Despite the higher expenditure, the Consistory assures that the lighting model will remain efficient and sustainable. All installations will use LED technology, and energy consumption will continue to be borne by the awarded company. The commitment to warm light string lights in the city center and main avenues, the rotation of designs across different districts, and the incorporation of proposals from the school drawing competition will be maintained.
“"An investment absolutely profitable for the city of Madrid."
The City Council defends this investment by highlighting its economic impact. According to municipal data, last year's Christmas campaign generated over 4.1 billion euros in the city, with an average daily expenditure of 89.3 million. These figures reinforce the municipal government's stance that Christmas lighting, while not magical, significantly contributes to the vibrancy of Madrid's economy during the festive season.
