Madrid Expands Robotics and AI for Early Intervention in 10 Schools

The Community of Madrid is adding nine public schools to a pioneering program using robots and artificial intelligence to support students with special needs.

The Community of Madrid will extend the ROBIC program, which employs social robotics and Artificial Intelligence (AI), to ten public schools next academic year to bolster support for students with special needs.

This initiative aims to enhance support for students with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), developmental delays, motor or cognitive limitations, neurodevelopmental disorders, or consequences of brain injury. The program provides educators and therapists with an additional tool to adapt activities and facilitate learning, while educational decisions remain with the professionals.
During sessions, students interact with a humanoid robot equipped with 3D cameras and sensors. AI analyzes these interactions to select appropriate exercises from the program's catalog, focusing on improving communication, oral and body expression, psychomotor skills, and self-awareness. The information gathered is used solely for personalizing education, adhering to data protection regulations.
The pilot project, conducted over eight months at the Colegio Gaudem in the capital with 30 minors aged four to ten, has shown increased interest, participation, and motivation. Evaluations also indicate improved comprehension of instructions and a calmer, more collaborative learning environment.

A notable case involves a girl with ASD at the school who began to show communicative skills after interacting with the robot, despite previous speech difficulties. Teaching staff have highlighted the tool's ease of integration and its ability to personalize learning without increasing their workload. Families have also expressed satisfaction with their children's improved well-being and enthusiasm.
Following these positive outcomes, the ROBIC program will expand to nine additional public schools: Inmaculada Concepción (Madrid), Duque de Ahumada (Valdemoro), Miguel Hernández (Colmenar Viejo), Peñalara (Collado Villalba), Iker Casillas (Torrejón de Ardoz), Perú (Carabanchel), Maestra Trinidad García (Fuenlabrada), El Olivar (Rivas-Vaciamadrid), and Profesor Tierno Galván (Alcobendas).
This expansion reinforces the Community of Madrid's strategy in leveraging technology to provide increasingly personalized educational support, integrating innovation to complement the daily work of educators and therapists.
