The mayor of Madrid has expressed optimism regarding the construction of the parking facility on Paseo de la Castellana, adjacent to the Santiago Bernabéu Stadium. These statements follow a meeting between the City Council, neighborhood representatives, and Real Madrid, which the mayor described as “satisfactory,” seeing it as an opportunity to realize an infrastructure he believes will benefit local residents.
From the EMT Madrid operations center in Sanchinarro, the mayor explained that the current situation of the Castellana parking project is significantly different from the failed Padre Damián project. This new parking plan would not generate the same impact on local mobility or the problems associated with the 650-meter tunnel that was part of the previous design, which was ultimately discarded by the Consistory.
“"We understood that the Castellana parking was advanced, that it did not affect mobility conditions as the other parking, Padre Damián, could, and that our intention was to try to finalize that parking, but for that it was essential that Real Madrid, residents, and the City Council sit down, which is what we are doing."
A new meeting is scheduled for this Friday to continue negotiations. The main objective is to move forward with the Castellana parking project with the support of all involved parties, aiming for the initiative to directly benefit residents in the stadium's vicinity.
This project is set against a backdrop of a judicial and neighborhood precedent that led to the cancellation of another major operation in the same area. Last October, the mayor acknowledged the impracticality of appealing the ruling by the Superior Court of Justice of Madrid, which sided with the Bernabéu residents. That resolution upheld the judicial decision to annul the concession for constructing two parking facilities, one on Padre Damián Street and another on Paseo de la Castellana. Consequently, the City Council decided to abandon the Padre Damián project and its associated tunnel, citing neighborhood opposition and legal obstacles.
Since then, the Consistory has worked to revive the Castellana project as a viable alternative, seeking to gain the support of residents and avoid the issues that thwarted the previous initiative.
