The Madrid City Council, through the Presidency of the Plenary, is evaluating all options regarding the future of the Vox municipal group, after receiving official notification of the expulsion of Javier Ortega Smith and other councilors.

The situation arises after the Vox party submitted a formal letter to the General Secretariat of the Madrid City Council Plenary, communicating the expulsion of Javier Ortega Smith, Ignacio Ansaldo, and Carla Toscano. This information was confirmed by Mayor José Luis Martínez-Almeida during the press conference following the Governing Board meeting.

"The only record we have is that a letter has been submitted by the Vox political party to the General Secretariat of the Madrid City Council Plenary formally communicating the expulsion of Javier Ortega Smith as well as Ignacio Ansaldo and Carla Toscano."

José Luis Martínez-Almeida · Mayor of Madrid
Ortega Smith, for his part, has announced his intention to legally challenge what he considers an «arbitrary» and «illegal» expulsion. Through his account on the social network X, the former Vox leader described the decision by the National Executive Committee (CEN) as a «violation of his fundamental rights, arbitrary and arrogant,» after his appeal was dismissed.
Mayor Martínez-Almeida indicated that, once the letter is received, it is up to the President of the Plenary, Borja Fanjul, with the legal assistance of the General Secretary of the Plenary, to make decisions and issue appropriate resolutions. The mayor had previously requested that «all options» be analyzed regarding the status of the councilors as non-attached members and the impact on the Vox municipal group.
From Vox, it has been argued that Ortega Smith's expulsion is the result of a «rigorous and serious» process, carried out «in accordance with the most demanding standards of the Rule of LawOrtega Smith's decision to go to court could delay his removal as spokesperson for the municipal group in the capital, effectively preventing Arantxa Cabello, the designated replacement by the leadership, from assuming the role in Cibeles.
The Vox Guarantees Committee announced Javier Ortega Smith's expulsion in early March, after deeming that he had committed a «very serious infraction» by thwarting his replacement as party spokesperson in the Madrid City Council, which led to disciplinary action for disobedience and the suspension of his membership.
