The Madrid City Council has approved a new framework agreement for the installation, maintenance, and dismantling of Christmas lighting, with an investment of 7 million euros for 2026, representing an increase of 900,000 euros compared to 2025, aiming to expand coverage across the city.

The Madrid City Council's Governing Board, as announced by Deputy Mayor and municipal spokesperson, Inma Sanz, has given its approval to this contract covering the installation, conservation, and dismantling services for the city's ornamental Christmas lighting. This agreement includes the assembly and disassembly of luminous elements, as well as their daily switching on and off via a telecontrol system, ensuring the proper functioning of the entire installation.
The contract has been structured into two distinct lots. The first is allocated to elements located within the M-30, as well as the arches and fir trees to be installed outside this road. The second lot will focus on the string lights and luminous cherry trees that will adorn the areas outside the ring road.
The Consistory has reaffirmed its commitment to environmental sustainability, ensuring that Christmas lighting will continue to use LED technology. This choice prioritizes energy saving and the reduction of light pollution. Furthermore, as has been customary in previous years, the successful bidder will be responsible for covering the energy consumption costs.
The agreement also plans to promote the use of warm-colored string lights in the city center and on main thoroughfares. The rotation of designs across different areas of Madrid will be encouraged to facilitate their reuse. Additionally, the contractor will be tasked with transforming the winning proposals from the school drawing competition organized by the City Council into lighting elements.
The contract, managed by the Department of Public Works and Equipment, will have an initial duration of 12 months, with the possibility of extension for another 12. Its estimated value for 2026 amounts to 7 million euros, representing an increase of 900,000 euros compared to 2025. This increase is justified by the need to extend lighting to more spaces and by the rise in labor, material, fuel, and energy costs, according to municipal sources.
The City Council emphasizes that Christmas lighting has become a national and international benchmark, as well as a significant economic driver for the city. During the 2025-2026 Christmas campaign, from the switch-on until Three Kings' Day, an estimated economic return of 4,109.4 million euros was generated, with an average daily expenditure of 89.3 million, according to data from the City Council's General Directorate of Economy.
