Regional president, Isabel Díaz Ayuso, announced this investment during her visit to the public school Andrea Casamayor in Paracuellos del Jarama, marking the start of the 2026/2027 school year. Ayuso described the measure as a "historic investment," emphasizing the urgent need to act given increasingly warmer summers and later autumns.
This plan responds to criticisms received at the end of the previous academic year regarding high classroom temperatures, which sometimes exceeded 34 degrees. Parent associations had called for significant investments to improve climate control, noting the issue was not isolated.
The investment will be distributed between the Ministry of Education, Science, and Universities, contributing 840 million for around 500 public institutes and regional nursery schools, and the Ministry of the Presidency, Justice, and Local Administration. The latter will allocate up to 400 million through the Regional Investment Program (PIR) for 178 municipalities to carry out improvements in over 800 centers, including Grouped Rural Schools (CRA), CEIP, CEIPSO, and municipal nursery schools.
The objective is to renovate the entire public educational infrastructure. The Ministry of Education will continue its climate control plan, which since 2019 has completed over 1,500 actions with an investment of 59 million. For the 2026/27 academic year, an additional 111 interventions worth 21 million will be added.
In addition to climate control, the plan includes sustainability and energy efficiency works, such as improving thermal envelopes, installing photovoltaic energy, solar hot water systems, and replacing lighting with higher-efficiency fixtures. Accessibility improvements, including elevator installations and the removal of architectural barriers, will also be addressed.
The 400 million contribution from the Ministry of the Presidency consists of 240 million directly from the PIR and up to 160 million more that municipalities can mobilize by allocating up to 50% of the PIR funds they receive from the Community. Of this, 30 million will be designated for nursery schools and children's centers, and 370 million for 571 municipal public schools.
