This investment, approved by the Governing Council, is designated to complete the equipment for the first section of the future diagonal of the Metro network, connecting Plaza Elíptica and Conde de Casal. The contract was awarded for 104 million euros, a 15% reduction from the initial bidding budget of 123 million, enabling an optimization of public resources.
The project includes the installation of 29 elevators, 60 escalators, a comprehensive fire protection system, catenary systems, and other complementary works that, due to their technical nature, require independent planning from the civil engineering construction.
Concurrently, work on the first section of the Line 11 expansion, spanning 6.7 kilometers, is progressing. Excavation fronts between the future Comillas and Madrid Río stations were recently connected, facilitated by the tunnel boring machine Mayrit.
The Plaza Elíptica-Conde de Casal section has now surpassed 45% completion. The Comillas and Madrid Río stations show progress rates of approximately 60% and 58%, respectively, while work continues at the connection points of Atocha, Palos de la Frontera, and Conde de Casal.
The expansion of Line 11 will establish this infrastructure as a major diagonal axis for the Metro network, enhancing connectivity between neighborhoods, fostering new urban developments, reducing travel times, and decreasing the number of transfers.
