Dr. Paz-Ares is a recognized national and international leader in medical oncology. His scientific contributions have been crucial in developing new biological and immunological targets and personalized therapeutic strategies to combat one of the most aggressive subtypes of this disease.
He has led numerous international clinical trials that have transformed lung cancer treatment. Notably, the phase 3 IMforte study, whose results on the combination of lurbinectedin and atezolizumab significantly improved patient survival, leading to its approval by the FDA and EMA.
In addition to his work at the 12 de Octubre Hospital and CNIO, Paz-Ares is a professor of Medicine at the Complutense University of Madrid. Throughout his career, he has received multiple accolades, including the Heine H. Hansen Lectureship Award, the Nóvoa Santos Award, and the Santiago Ramón y Cajal Diploma.
In 2024, Paz-Ares was also one of the principal investigators for a project on small cell lung cancer that received a €10 million grant from the Spanish Association Against Cancer (AECC).
