The Centro district in Madrid is getting ready for the new edition of the Mayos Festival, a spring tradition recognized as an Asset of Cultural Interest and awarded the National Prize for Popular Traditions in 2024.

The Lavapiés neighborhood will be the epicenter of this festivity, symbolizing the renewal of life and the arrival of spring. Throughout the day, girls and young women will sit on altars adorned with flowers, while companions dressed in 18th and 19th-century Madrid fashion, folk groups, and residents will join in a celebration that blends music, dance, and deeply rooted customs.
The festival is organized by the Centro Municipal Board and the Mayos Festival Commission. It will feature the participation of various groups linked to Madrid folklore, including El Madroño, Arrabel, Los Castizos, El Orgullo de Madrid, Fiestas Populares de Lavapiés, La Mayor, DaLaNota, and SEAYTP, among other entities.
Activities will begin at 11:00 AM in Lavapiés Square with dances by the Arrabel group and the La Dulzaina de Aluche School. There will also be a presentation of commemorative souvenirs and ceramics, along with an open rondón dance demonstration for all attendees. At 11:45 AM, the streets of La Fe, Salitre, Doctor Piga, and Argumosa will host a popular party with rosquillas, Madrid wines, and the distribution of flowers and plants, in addition to the round to the Mayas and the singing of Mayos by the Arrabel group and the La Dulzaina de Aluche School.
The morning program will conclude at 2:15 PM at the Church of San Lorenzo, where a floral offering will take place with the musical collaboration of the Madrid Low Voices Choir. Earlier, at 12:15 PM, Lavapiés Square will once again host a concert by the DaLaNota Youth Orchestra.
