The Plaza de Cervantes in Alcalá de Henares hosted a new edition of La Despensa de Madrid, a traveling market promoting agri-food products from the Community of Madrid, uniting local producers and consumers in a festive atmosphere.

On Sunday, the iconic Plaza de Cervantes transformed into a vibrant gastronomic showcase with the celebration of a new edition of La Despensa de Madrid. This initiative, promoted by the Community of Madrid in collaboration with the Alcalá City Council, offered residents and visitors the chance to discover and purchase local products such as cured cheeses, artisan honey, young wines, and liqueurs.
From early morning, numerous attendees browsed the stalls set up under white tents, tasting artisan products and chatting with producers. The event highlighted the opportunity for consumers to directly meet those who create the food that reaches their tables, fostering a deeper connection with the origin of Madrid's products.
The mayor of Alcalá de Henares, Judith Piquet, accompanied by councilwoman Orlena de Miguel, visited the exhibitors and spoke with participants such as Licores Trampero, Bodegas Viña Bardela, and Nutrivida Miel, companies that represent artisanal tradition and a commitment to proximity products.
In an era of fast consumption and globalization, initiatives like La Despensa de Madrid champion local production and small-scale producers. The ability to ask producers about their methods and recommendations added a conversational value to the shopping experience, reminiscent of traditional markets.
The Plaza de Cervantes provided a particularly attractive setting, with the colors of fruits, vegetables, wines, and preserves creating a recognizable Sunday postcard. The sound of impromptu tastings naturally integrated into the festive and relaxed atmosphere.

"By buying local products, consumers contribute to revitalizing the region's economy, participating in its development."

The Community of Madrid has promoted this traveling brand since 2014 through the M Producto Certificado seal, which currently includes nearly 500 companies and over 4,000 products from the region, serving as a key tool for promoting Madrid's agri-food sector.
The Alcalá edition featured organic products, artisan cheeses, meats, wines, oils, honeys, and preserves. Many visitors took advantage of tastings to discover new brands, while others directly sought out regular producers, demonstrating the ritualistic nature of these markets for loyal consumers.
Alcalá, with its Plaza de Cervantes as an improvised gastronomic hall, reaffirmed the value of its historic center as a venue for such activities. The monumental heritage, weekend tourism, and commercial life of the center create a perfect ecosystem for initiatives that blend tradition, gastronomy, and economic promotion.
The success of La Despensa de Madrid lies in transforming the heart of Alcalá into a market of local flavors, where residents leave with bags full of artisan products, discussing their gastronomic discoveries.
