Spanish airline Iberia commenced operations this Saturday on its new transatlantic route connecting Madrid with Toronto, thereby strengthening its network in North America. The service will operate with five weekly frequencies—Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays—and will offer a total of 34,576 seats until the end of the summer season.
For this route, the airline has assigned the Airbus A321XLR, a long-range aircraft for which Iberia was the launch customer. This model represents the most advanced equipment in its fleet for transatlantic operations, featuring the Airspace cabin with enlarged overhead bins, LED lighting, and an enhanced sense of space. It has a capacity for 182 passengers, distributed across two classes: Business and Economy.
This new Canadian connection is part of a broader expansion strategy that includes reinforcements in flights to the United States. Specifically, New York solidifies its position as the primary North American destination with the addition of a new daily flight to Newark, complementing the existing two daily connections to JFK.
In parallel, Iberia is completing its first full summer operating the route to Orlando, which it inaugurated in October 2025 with three weekly frequencies and 51,856 available seats. This expansion reflects the company's commitment to consolidating its presence in the U.S. market.
In Latin America, the airline has opened new connections to Recife and Fortaleza in Brazil, and to Monterrey in Mexico. The latter route began operations on June 2nd with three weekly flights, marking the start of a reinforced presence in the region.
These movements are part of the Flight Plan 2030, which drives Iberia's capacity growth for the summer. The company will offer 21.4 million seats starting March 29th, a figure supported by the incorporation of new long-range aircraft, including six Airbus A321XLRs and one A350-900.
Despite the context of uncertainty generated by the crisis in the Middle East and its effects on fuel prices and the aeronautical supply chain, Iberia is maintaining its operational planning unchanged for this summer season. The company has ruled out applying cuts or cancellations to its flight schedule, reaffirming its commitment to the planned expansion.
