The Hospital público 12 de Octubre in the Community of Madrid has launched AMIGA, a mobile application co-designed with patients and professionals to assist individuals who have suffered a heart attack, promoting treatment adherence and combating loneliness.

The AMIGA (Acute Myocardial Infarction Guidance and Adherence) application stems from the European project JACARDI (Joint Action on Cardiovascular Diseases and Diabetes), an initiative aimed at combating cardiovascular diseases and diabetes, which are leading causes of death in Europe. This tool is conceived as a digital companion for post-heart attack patients, addressing the critical public health issue of low treatment adherence after hospital discharge.
The design of AMIGA has focused on user experience, distinguishing it from other applications with a purely clinical approach. Numerous sessions have been held with patients of various ages and digital literacy levels, who have contributed to defining its functionalities, including accessibility aspects such as contrast, font size, and voice options. The cyclical development methodology has involved cardiologists, psychologists, and technicians, adapting essential functions such as daily questions, motivational messages, challenges, medication reminders, and reward systems.

"Hospital discharge after a heart attack represents a radical life change that often leads to loneliness, mental health problems, and abandonment of medical guidelines. AMIGA has been designed with a multidisciplinary team of cardiologists, psychologists, and rehabilitation experts, and with patients from the Hospital 12 de Octubre Heart Patients Association (ASECOR), to adapt to the real needs of patients."

The pilot study for AMIGA, which plans to recruit 350 patients, will remain active until October 2027. The goal is for this application to become a standard of care at Hospital 12 de Octubre and serve as a reference for other hospitals in Spain and Europe. The project has an investment of 1.4 million euros and is part of JACARDI, a four-year European initiative involving over 200 experts from 21 countries, funded with 53 million euros by the European Commission.
Cardiovascular diseases are the leading cause of death in the European Union and Spain, particularly affecting women. A study by the i+12 Research Institute at Hospital 12 de Octubre revealed that 84.6% of patients do not adequately comply with secondary prevention measures one year after a heart attack, significantly increasing the risk of rehospitalization. AMIGA aims to mitigate these risks by offering support and reducing feelings of loneliness and anxiety in patients.
