A 67-year-old man has been hospitalized in critical condition due to a fire that originated in the kitchen of his residence, located on Laguna Street in the Carabanchel district of Madrid. The incident, which occurred shortly before 11:00 PM on Sunday, resulted in the kitchen being completely destroyed by flames, which spread to one of the facades and affected an interior courtyard.
Emergencias Madrid reported that the victim sustained burns covering 30% of his body and suffered smoke inhalation. Samur-Civil Protection paramedics stabilized and intubated him at the scene before his transfer.
Crews from Madrid Firefighters responded to extinguish the blaze and rescue the sole occupant of the apartment. They successfully put out the flames, preventing their spread to other units in the building. The man was urgently transported to the burn unit at La Paz Hospital, with his convoy escorted by agents of the Madrid Municipal Police.
A report by Fundación Mapfre and the Professional Association of Firefighters, presented in November 2025, indicates that deaths in home fires in the Community of Madrid decreased by 25% in 2024. There were 12 fatalities compared to 16 in 2023, with a rate of 1.71 deaths per million inhabitants, below the national average.
