The program, titled 'Ponte en mi lugar, hoy arbitras tú' (Put yourself in my shoes, today you referee), was developed by the General Directorate of Sports and the General Directorate of the Municipal Police. Its main goal is to sensitize the companions of pre-benjamin category players (aged 6 to 8) about the complexity and importance of the referee's function, fostering attitudes of respect, tolerance, and fair play both on and off the field.
The activity has been integrated into the Municipal Sports Games and implemented in six city districts: Barajas, Carabanchel, Retiro, Salamanca, San Blas-Canillejas, and Villaverde. A total of 64 teams participated, playing 32 matches during the Friday 17th and Saturday 18th of April.
“"By taking on the referee's role, companions have experienced firsthand the responsibility of making decisions and maintaining the proper flow of the game."
Each family member who served as a referee received a whistle and cards, symbolizing their commitment to rules and sportsmanship. The Royal Football Federation of Madrid (RFFM) actively collaborated, providing prior training to participants. A webinar was held on April 15th to explain the basic rules and the experience's development.
Furthermore, federated referees were present at all matches, acting as mediators, resolving doubts, and ensuring a calm and confident environment, even though the primary refereeing role was assumed by family members. With this initiative, the Municipal Sports Games reinforce their commitment to a model that prioritizes values and education, promoting coexistence among players, families, and refereeing bodies.
