The Madrid City Council has completed the excavation of the southern tunnel of the A-5, the main undergrounding project in the capital, confirming that the project is progressing as planned for its opening in late 2026.

The A-5 undergrounding project, considered the most significant intervention in Madrid since the covering of the M-30 in Madrid Río, has completed the excavation of the remaining 20% of the southern tunnel, which serves as the entrance to the capital. This milestone was achieved in just one month, as reported by Mayor José Luis Martínez-Almeida during a visit to the works.
The mayor emphasized that, despite the heavy rains recorded in January and February, and difficulties in the international supply of materials due to the war in Iran, the project schedule is being maintained and even shows a slight advance. The opening of this infrastructure to traffic is planned for late 2026.

"In September, we can start working on the landscaping."

The new underground section extends from the junction of Padre Piquer Avenue to the connection point with the M-30 underpass on Portugal Avenue, which is yet to be opened. Once the excavation is complete, efforts will focus on the surface urbanization, which will include the creation of gardens, new squares, and a bike lane, transforming the space currently occupied by asphalt. The Mobility Delegate, Borja Carabante, accompanied the mayor on his visit.
