The Minister of Presidency, Justice and Local Administration of the Community of Madrid, Miguel Ángel García Martín, has supported the initiative of the regional president to undertake an institutional trip to Mexico. This trip was ultimately canceled due to what the regional Executive has described as a “boycott climate” orchestrated by the Mexican president.
During an event in Alcalá de Henares, the minister stated that, since the regional president's arrival in the country, both left-wing sectors and the Mexican president herself attempted to sabotage “each and every one” of the scheduled commitments on the official agenda.
“"The left and the far-left intend to curtail the freedom of the regional president, who they are uncomfortable with for holding the Mexican president accountable."
The spokesperson for the regional Government specifically criticized attempts to “prevent the participation” of the regional president in the Platino Awards, accolades designed to strengthen cultural ties between Spain and Mexico. According to the minister, this attitude seeks to weaken the international projection of the Community of Madrid.
Regarding objections about the cost of the trip, the minister emphasized that all institutional trips abroad, by any administration, are financed from the corresponding public budgets, a standard procedure in public management. He drew a parallel with the international trips of the President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez, calling it an “absurd question” to challenge the funding of these trips by the organizing institution.
The minister reiterated that the regional president will continue to make foreign trips to promote the strengths of Madrid, linking the attraction of foreign investment to her administration's liberal economic policies and the president's international projection.
