The top-ranked candidate in the EIR 2026 exam has selected Pediatrics as her specialty at the Hospital Infantil Universitario Niño Jesús in Madrid, marking the beginning of her career as a specialist nurse within the National Health System.

The 22-year-old from Madrid achieved the highest score among more than 11,000 applicants in the EIR 2026 examination. Her decision to specialize in Pediatrics stems from a deep-seated vocation for caring for the most vulnerable, especially children, with whom she claims to have a

Currently, the nurse also works at a school in Tres Cantos, which further strengthens her focus on pediatric care and comprehensive care from an early age. Unlike previous EIR top scorers, who chose Obstetric-Gynecological Nursing, she has prioritized child accompaniment.

The EIR 2026 exam, held on January 24, saw 11,204 candidates compete for 2,279 positions, resulting in a ratio of 4.9 applicants per spot. This level of competitiveness surpasses that of the MIR, indicating a growing interest in nursing specialization within the healthcare system.
From the PlanEIR Academic Committee, a specialist nurse and educator with experience in EIR preparation since 2018, noted that while the number of available positions has increased,

"this progress remains insufficient to meet the real needs of the healthcare system, especially in specialties with higher care demands"

She also highlighted the need to better adjust the distribution of positions to correct existing imbalances. The specialist emphasized that nursing specialization is crucial for addressing current healthcare system challenges, and promoting it should be a priority.
