González, who was an opposition candidate for the 2024 presidential elections in Venezuela, announced via social media that he would not be able to join María Corina Machado at the anticipated gathering in Madrid. He explained that he has been hospitalized for several days for follow-up care after an operation a month ago, and chose to wait for Machado's arrival in the Spanish capital before making the news public.
“"As always, I want to speak to you with the truth. I will not be able to accompany you. I have been hospitalized for a few days, following up on the intervention a month ago, and I had not announced it earlier because I wanted to wait for María Corina to arrive in Madrid."
Despite his health condition, González revealed that Machado visited him in the hospital, where they had a long conversation. He emphasized the importance of the event for Venezuelans and stated that he would follow the proceedings from his recovery location, paying close attention to every detail. The opposition figure highlighted that these gatherings, whether in Madrid, Miami, or Santiago, bring closer the day of return to Venezuela.
María Corina Machado's visit to Spain includes a reception by the president of the Community of Madrid, Isabel Díaz Ayuso, and the awarding of the Gold Medal of the Community of Madrid to Machado. Meanwhile, González, who has lived in Madrid since 2024 after receiving asylum, will be honored with the International Medal of the region. Additionally, Machado will receive the Golden Key of the Spanish capital from Mayor José Luis Martínez-Almeida at the Casa de la Villa.
