Following a previous student protest, the temporary removal of the crane had been interpreted as a response to their complaints. However, its return this Monday has once again sparked outrage among students and families, who believe the underlying issue remains unresolved.
Students report that the institute continues to operate amidst construction, with heavy machinery inside the center, constant noise during classes, scaffolding, fenced-off areas, and a significant reduction in common spaces, especially the playground. Additionally, some students are still attending classes in temporary classrooms, which further exacerbates the discomfort.
“"It is impossible to study normally amidst noise, fences, construction, and less space for everyone."
The student mobilization was called to denounce that construction is proceeding while academic activities continue as usual, which, in the students' opinion, directly affects their safety and their right to study in dignified conditions. The complaint is not limited to mere inconvenience but also to the daily impact this situation has on the school's life.
The conflict has extended beyond the institute's internal sphere. CCOO de Madrid has publicly denounced a “serious risk” for minors due to the construction work being carried out without suspending academic activity, while the Sindicato de Estudiantes has also supported the protest and demanded an urgent solution. Families and students insist that this is not an isolated incident but a prolonged situation affecting the normal development of the school year.
The case of IES Mariano José de Larra once again highlights the planning of construction projects in operational educational centers. The educational community demands measures to guarantee the safety of students and teachers and to put an end to a situation they describe as inappropriate for a school in the middle of the academic year.
