The president of the Community of Madrid, Isabel Díaz Ayuso, has announced that the region will honor two key figures of the Venezuelan opposition. The Gold Medal will be awarded to opposition leader María Corina Machado, while the International Medal of the Community will be presented to Edmundo González, who was a candidate in the recent Venezuelan presidential elections.
The spokesperson for the regional government, Miguel Ángel García Martín, reported these awards following the Governing Council meeting. The decision is based on the trajectory of both leaders and their dedication to defending freedom and democratic principles in Venezuela.
The regional government has highlighted María Corina Machado's role at the forefront of the opposition to Chavismo. Regarding Edmundo González, his efforts from exile to promote a future democratic transition in the Caribbean nation have been emphasized.
The presentation of these distinctions will take place during the visit of both opposition leaders to Spain. A meeting with Isabel Díaz Ayuso and the Governing Council is scheduled for Saturday, April 18 at 5:30 PM at the Real Casa de Correos, the seat of the regional government in Madrid. The primary objective of this meeting will be to analyze the political situation in Venezuela and the struggle for its people's freedom.
