The Community of Madrid, under the presidency of Isabel Díaz Ayuso, has announced the awarding of the Gold Medal to María Corina Machado and the International Community Medal to Edmundo González, both Venezuelan opposition leaders, in a ceremony to be held at the Real Casa de Correos.

The spokesperson for the regional Executive, Miguel Ángel García Martín, highlighted Corina Machado's tireless fight for freedom and democracy, as well as González's role in promoting a future democratic transition from exile. These decorations will be presented during the Venezuelan opposition leaders' visit to Spain, which includes a meeting with the regional president this Saturday at the seat of the regional Government.
In addition to the recognition for the Venezuelan leaders, the Governing Council of the Community of Madrid has approved the Grand Cross of the Order of Dos de Mayo for 14 personalities. Among the honorees are Enrique Cerezo, president of Atlético de Madrid since 2003, for his business and cinematic career, and Formula 1 driver Carlos Sainz Jr., recognized as a sports icon and ambassador for Madrid's sport internationally.
Madrid's Paralympic skier Audrey Pascual will also receive the distinction for her two world championships, serving as an example of overcoming challenges and inclusion. The Vuelta Ciclista a España and its director, Francisco Javier Guillén Bedoya, will be honored for their contribution to sport and the promotion of Spain, including the Community of Madrid, where the race traditionally concludes.
Other awardees include painter Augusto Ferrer-Dalmau, a leading contemporary exponent of historical painting, and journalist César Lumbreras, for his more than four decades of giving a voice to the rural world on the Agropopular program on COPE. Professionals from the Wildlife Recovery Center (CRAS) will be recognized for their work in conserving Madrid's biodiversity.
In the social and health sector, Miguel Carballeda, president of ONCE, will be distinguished for his model of inclusion for people with disabilities, and José Eugenio Guerrero, head of the ICU at Gregorio Marañón Hospital, for his career as an intensivist and his role during the pandemic. The multinational IBM will receive an award for its historical relationship with the region and its 100 years of presence in Spain by 2026, as will the Hospital Universitario San Francisco de Asís for a century of healthcare service.
Finally, the Grand Cross will be awarded to La Pajarita, a symbol of traditional Madrid commerce since 1852, and to Club Metrópoli for its project to revitalize the Metrópolis Building. The distinction will also go to the twelve students from IES Humanejos de Parla, known as ‘Los vigilantes de Parla’, for their bravery in saving a woman's life in Ireland during a school trip, symbolizing the civic and solidarity values of Madrid's youth.
